The award was created in 2011 by South of Broadway Theatre Company (SOBTC) in recognition of the important work of mentoring youth. Each of the namesakes has made significant lifetime contributions to the field, and SOBTC’s similar commitment is exemplified by their Summer in the City (SITC) program.  SITC is a month-long artistic residency in New York City where program youth, ages 13-18 reside at The Juilliard School.  SITC in now in its ninth year and has expanded its reach nationally and internationally.

Past recipients of the Summey Barkley Rucker Medallion are:

2011:   Anita Zucker,  Internationally known philanthropist and InterTech Group CEO

2012:  Lonnie Hamilton III, an iconic figure in Low Country education, arts and politics

Mr. Cosby’s stature as an artist and the emphasis he has placed on mentoring youth requires no introduction, and makes him a natural ambassador for the cause the Summey Barkley Rucker Medallion celebrates.  A brighter torch would be difficult to find, and a simpler more straightforward and cost-effective platform impossible upon which to improve:

Mr. Cosby said, “The revolution must begin at home.  Parents must parent.  Mentoring starts with the mother and father.”

-Bill Cosby, 11/17/13

“Mr. Cosby’s name on the Summey Barkley Rucker Medallion is a major asset which will inspire more people to pick up the mentoring torch to help and challenge young people to broaden the horizons of individual potential, and instill the discipline required for a career in the arts, or equally; a productive and rewarding life.”

-Mary Gould, Producer,  South of Broadway Theatre Company

SOBTC is a not-for-profit full-service theatre producing dramas, comedies, musicals, and operas, and a full array of classes and outreach programs to at-risk, underserved youth.  For more information about SITC, including upcoming auditions visit  SummerInNYC.org.
